Subclass 190 Skilled Nominated Visa
Permanent residence with state or territory nomination
The Subclass 190 Skilled Nominated visa is a permanent residence visa for skilled workers who are nominated by an Australian state or territory. Unlike the 189, you need a nomination before you can be invited to apply, but you receive 5 extra points for that nomination, and you still get permanent residence from day one.
Each state and territory has its own occupation lists and criteria. Some prioritise certain professions, regional areas, or commitment to live and work in that state. If your occupation is in demand in a state where you are willing to live, the 190 can be a faster or more achievable pathway than waiting for a 189 invitation, especially when 189 invitation points are very high for your occupation.
How points work for the 190 visa
As with all skilled points-tested visas, you need at least 65 points to be eligible. Your points are made up of the same factors as the 189 (age, English, work experience, education, etc.). For the 190, you then add 5 nomination points when a state or territory nominates you, so your total is base points + 5.
That 5-point boost can move you above the invitation threshold for your occupation. For example, if your base points are 70, your 190 total would be 75—which might be enough to receive a state nomination and then a visa invitation, even if 189 invitations for your occupation are currently at 80 or 85.
States often have their own minimum points (e.g. 65 or 70). They also consider factors such as your commitment to the state, occupation demand, and sometimes English level. Our calculator shows your base points and the 5-point nomination bonus for the 190 so you can see your total.
The 190 gives 5 nomination points when you are nominated by a state or territory.
Eligibility at a glance
You must have a positive skills assessment in an occupation that is on the state or territory’s skilled list, meet age and English requirements, and score at least 65 points (including the 5 nomination points). You must be nominated by a state or territory before you can be invited to apply for the 190. Each state has its own process, closing dates, and criteria.
Health and character requirements apply. Because nomination criteria change regularly, always check the relevant state or territory migration website and the Department of Home Affairs for the latest 190 eligibility and nomination requirements.
